Effects of growth hormone therapy

Nottingham Health Profile (NHP)

Growth hormone deficient adults may experience a number of health-related problems. To identify and measure these problems, studies of growth hormone deficient adults have used the Nottingham Health Profile (NHP), a general health-related, quality-of-life questionnaire, designed to give a brief measure of a patient's perceived physical, social, and emotional health. The NHP was used for Lilly's registration studies in adults with GHD.

Part I of the NHP was used in Humatrope clinical trials as one of the primary efficacy measures to determine the effect of Humatrope therapy on certain aspects of quality of life.

Part I of the NHP consists of 38 questions in six categories:

  • Pain
  • Physical mobility
  • Sleep
  • Emotional reactions
  • Energy level
  • Social isolation

After six months of Humatrope therapy, the NHP scores for AO growth hormone-deficient patients showed significant improvements in two of the NHP categories: physical mobility and social isolation. Improvements in NHP scores were not seen for energy level, emotional reactions, sleep, or pain. Patients with CO GHD did not show improvements in any of the six NHP categories after six months of Humatrope therapy.
